Researchers will introduce students of the University of Vienna to Lithuanian history

On October 16, Dr. Darius Baronas (Lithuanian Institute of History)  will lecture at the University of Vienna entitled "The formation of the Lithuanian state and expansion into the lands of Rus'". This is one of the first lectures in a 14-week series for students at the University of Vienna.

This initiative aims to familiarize University of Vienna students with Lithuanian history. The lecture series is organized by the Lithuanian Institute of History, the University of Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the Faculty of History at Vilnius University.

Until the end of January 2026, historians from the Lithuanian Institute of History and Vilnius University will give weekly lectures in Vienna.

Researchers from the Lithuanian Institute of History will introduce students to Lithuanian history from the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to the period of Soviet occupation.

Lectures will also be given at the University of Vienna by researchers from the Lithuanian Institute of History: Dr. Alvydas Nikžentaitis ("Der Erinnerung an das Großfürstentum Litauen"), Dr. Darius Staliūnas ("Lithuania under the Tsarist rule (19th century)"), Dr. Stephen Rowell ("Jagiellonian dynasty in Central Europe"), Dr. Tomas Balkelis ("War, Revolution and Nation-making in Lithuania"), and Dr. Vladas Sirutavičius ("Soviet Rule in Lithuania").
