Lecture of the Year: a look at the history of Lithuania by Prof. R. Butterwick-Pawlikowski

The Lithuanian Institute of History cordially invites to the Lecture of the Year. Professor Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski (Great Britain) will give a lecture "Encountering Lithuanian Histories: Lands and People between Nation-state, Unions, and Empires" in Vilnius.

According to Dr Aurimas Švedas, Director of the Institute of Lithuanian History, this event marks the beginning of a new tradition of the Institute of History.

"The Lecture of the Year is a gift from the Lithuanian Institute of History to the Lithuanian public, inviting them to hear the voices of true authorities and eminent scholars, and to look at the history of our country, Europe and the world from a new perspective in order to commemorate the upcoming March 11th in a meaningful way," – says Dr. A. Švedas. - We are starting this new tradition with a lecture by Professor R. Butterwick-Pawlikowski. He is an exceptional personality with an excellent knowledge of Lithuanian history, whose insights will allow us to better understand not only how we see ourselves, but also how others see us."

Professor Butterwick-Pawlikowski is Professor of Polish-Lithuanian History at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London. He has been researching the relationship between Lithuanian and Polish statehood for over 30 years. Last year Prof. Butterwick-Pawlikowski published his latest English-language book „Lithuania: A History“, which aims to help the world community to better understand the deep and complex history of Lithuania.

The Lecture of the Year of the Lithuanian Institute of History will take place on Thursday, 5 March at 17:30 in the Small Hall of the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre (Gedimino Ave. 4, Vilnius). The lecture will be held in English with simultaneous translation into Lithuanian. The moderator of the event is journalist and writer Rytis Zemkauskas.

The event is free of charge, but pre-registration is required.
