      The International Forum is part of the programme Geschichtswerkstatt Europa by the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” and takes place from September 14th to September 19th 2010 in Vilnius.
      The one-week event is to includes seminars, lectures, city tours and exhibition visits. Scholars from a diverse background of disciplines from different parts of Europe will debate the current processes of remembrance in Europe. Convenors of the International Forum are the historians Matthias Middell and Stefan Troebst from Leipzig and the partners in Vilnius “The Lithuanian Institute of History”, the “Centre for Studies of the Culture and History of East European Jews” and the “Vilnius Yiddish Institute” of the University of Vilnius.
The aim of the Forum is to highlight the conflicting recollections of the European 20th century and to familiarise participants with recent research results in the area of collective and cultural memory.
      The International Forum is dedicated to the multilayered history of Vilnius/Wilno/Vil´na/Wilna. The many names attributed to the city indicates, from the outset, the culturally and religiously multifaceted character that Vilnius displays. Time and again Lithuanians, Poles, and Belarusians have all made national demands during the past thereby shaping the city making it what it is today.
      Two key aspects are starkly represented in the city's history and architecture whilst also commemorated by museums and memorials: first, that of the political constitution of the Jews between the two World Wars, and second, that of Soviet occupation in 1940.
      Due to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact Vilnius was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939. After one month it was given back to Lithuania. In summer 1940 Vilnius and Lithuania were occupied again by the Soviet Union. Both the memories of the Jewish tragedy as well as the memories of occupation are represented and remembered in Vilnius today alongside the cultural heritage of the “old” Vilnius.
      Lectures will mainly be given in English, lectures in Lithuanian will be translated into English. Participants should therefore be able to at least understand English and communicate actively in English.
      Grants and Requirements Travel grants cover costs for travel and accommodation (in double rooms), and include a daily allowance. The exact amount depends on the actual costs for participation and local regulations. In accordance with the purpose of the foundation, travel grants are primarily given to applicants of Central and Eastern Europe. Applicants should be between 18 and 35 years of age.
      We are currently accepting applications for participation in the conference. Applications should be sent to the address below and are to include a letter of motivation (maximum 600-1000 words) detailing personal interest in the this year`s topic of the International Forum and giving details of any previous experience in this field as well as prior knowledge and skills. Applications should also include a Curriculum Vitae. The closing date for applications is 31th May 2010. Applications will be reviewed by July 11th, and applicants will be notified immediately thereafter.

      We are seeking papers for an interdisciplinary conference on "Violence and Societies in East Central Europe, 18th to 20th centuries" to be presented in Vilnius, on October 14.-16., 2010. The conference is organized by the Herder-Institut (Marburg), the Lithuanian Institute of History (Vilnius), the Nordost-Institut (Lüneburg) in association with the research network "Gewaltgemeinschaften" (Organised Bodies of Violence) at the Justus-Liebig-University (Giessen), which is financed by the German DFG foundation.

      The theme of the conference:
      Different aspects of violence have long been at the centre of scholarly attention. This phenomenon was and still is widely investigated from historical, sociological, ethnological, cultural and other perspectives. These studies have revealed that across time violence has been one of the key factors in the creation, organisation, restructuring and ultimately destruction of social, political, economic, ethnic, and other groups and orders. Moreover, manifestations of violence are usually driven by a certain inner logic; they neither appear without cause or disappear without consequence, and in this way leave an imprint (traumatic or otherwise) on individuals, cultures and societies.
      East Central Europe presents a plethora of such examples. During the last century countries and peoples in this region witnessed some of the most dramatic and violent political, societal, economic and cultural changes. These peoples became victims of violence as well as perpetrators (e.g. the First and Second World Wars, civil wars and wars of independence, revolutions, coups etc.). In relation to this, the forthcoming conference will deal with the genesis, stabilisation and reproduction of violence in societies, and its relation to the social, cultural and political environment in East Central Europe (the Baltic States, Belarus, Finland, Poland and Ukraine) during the first half of the twentieth century. Violence in societies is understood here in the broadest of sense of the concept, and encompasses such topics as:
      1) Societal violence - social protests, political revolts, uprisings, revolutions, civil wars, pogroms, etc.
      2) State violence - wars, invasions, expansions, political rivalry and mobilisation, police raids, massacres, state terror, repressions, forced expulsions, constructed inner and outer threats and enemies, and so on;
      3) Violence in everyday life - violence in literature and its forms in everyday life (including such societal groups as soldiers, various military organisations, terrorists etc.), criminality, xenophobia, and
other;
      4) Violence in visual representations - promotion of violence in the mass media, photographs, monuments (including lieux de mémoire), posters, films and other visual material etc.
      5) Violence in culture - violence as cultural artefact; violence in literature; violence as emotional gratification (thrill, furore, etc.); rational and calculated violence (wish for power, glory or material
wellbeing);
      6) Gender and violence - violence in families, situation of women, children, marginal groups, etc.

      How to apply:
      The call for papers addresses younger scholars (to the age of 35) in Central Europe, the Baltic countries, and Scandinavia who would like to discuss their project. Any proposal which is of relevance for the topic, however, is highly welcome. Travel costs (only within Europe) as well as accommodation will be paid for by the organizers. The language of the proceedings is English.       A series of key note speakers form the region and other European countries will give an introductory view into the topic.

KVIETIMAS Į KONFERENCIJA

      2010-aisiais sukanka šimtas metų nuo žymios Lietuvos etnologės, Vilniaus universiteto profesorės Pranės Dundulienės, gimimo. Šia proga 2010 metų spalio 8-10 dienomis numatome surengti konferenciją „Etnologija: istorija, dabartis ir perspektyvos“.
      Profesorės mokslinis darbas apima kelis etnologijos mokslo vystymuisi svarbius istorinius laikotarpius. Tai skatina vieną konferencijos dalį skirti Europos šalių etnologijos istorijai, pamąstymams apie šio mokslo perspektyvas, sutelkiant dėmesį į mokslo ištakas, besikeičiančią šio mokslo sampratą, tyrimo objektą, metodus, tarpdisciplininius ryšius, institucionalizaciją, tiriamų problemų ratą, plėtros perspektyvas, bei iškilius, mokslo vystymąsi įtakojusius mokslininkus.
      Kitą šios konferencijos temą padiktavo mokslininkės darbai. Pirmieji jos straipsniai buvo skirti kalendoriniams, darbo, šeimos papročiams, o paskutinioji, jau po jos mirties išleista knyga - „Senieji lietuvių šeimos papročiai“. Todėl antrąją konferencijos dalį skirsime visapusiškai papročio, apeigos ir tradicijos analizei, sutelkdami dėmesį į XX a. antrosios pusės ir šių dienų padėtį.
      Konferencijos metu bus surengta prof. P. Dundulienei skirta paroda Švenčionių rajono savivaldybės viešojoje bibliotekoje, konferencijos dalyviai aplankys mokslininkės sodybą, susitiks su prof. Dundulienę pažinojusiais kraštiečiais. Taip pat svečiai apsilankys ir Lietuvos Nacionaliniame muziejuje, kurio nuoširdi bičiulė ir mokslinė konsultantė buvo profesorė Dundulienė.
      Konferencija vyks lietuvių ir anglų kalbomis. Numatomas sinchroninis vertimas.

CALL FOR PAPERS

      The year 2010 will mark a hundred years’ anniversary of the birth of a famous Lithuanian ethnologist, professor of Vilnius University, Pranė Dundulienė. On this occasion a conference called “Ethnology: History, Present and Future Prospects” is going to be held on 8-10 October 2010.
      Scientific work of the professor covers several historical periods of time important to the development of ethnology as a science. This induces one part of the conference to be allocated to the history of ethnology of European countries as well as to the thoughts on the perspectives of this particular science, focusing on the origins, changing concept, object of research and methods of the science, to its interdisciplinary relationship, institutionalization, the circle of the problems under investigation, developmental prospects and to prominent scientists who influenced the development of the science too.
      The other part of the conference was prompted by works of the scientist. Her first articles were intended for calendar, work and family traditions, whereas the last book, published after her death, was titled “The Old Lithuanian Family Traditions”. Hence, the second part of the conference will be devoted to a thorough analysis of a custom, ritual and tradition, focusing on the second half of the 20th century and the present situation as well.
      There will be an exhibition of the works of prof. P. Dundulienė organised in the public library of Švenčioniai District Municipality during the conference. Moreover, the participants of the conference will visit the House of the scientist and meet fellow-countrymen of prof. P. Dundulienė. The guests of the conference will also visit Lithuanian National Museum whose sincere and scientific consultant was professor Dundulienė.
      The conference will be held in Lithuanian and English languages. Simultaneous translation is intended. 
      We hope that you will find this proposal interesting, and will join us by contributing a paper at this conference.
